Having your own unique domain name
If you already have a website - then you probably already have your own unique domain name. This is the address that your site visitors will enter into their browser's address panel to find your site on the net. If you don't have a website, but are thinking about commissioning one soon, then part of the development process would be to register a unique domain name for you.
Sharing a parental domain name
If you already have a website that is part of an on-line directory of some kind then you may not necessarily have your own unique domain name - your site may be only accessible only by entering in a parental domain name, followed by a forward slash, followed by your name. This can sometimes be confusing for your visitors. It would be advisable to contact your host and request the registration of a unique domain name to point to your section of the directory. It would behave in much the same way as having your own unique domain name pointing to your own commercial grade webspace (as opposed to being part of a directory). But chances are when your visitors arrive at your section of the directory the address in their browser window would change to that of the parental domain.
Having more than one unique domain name
You can have more than one extension of your domain name pointing to your website. For example, you may already have a '.co.uk' extension but you can also have other extensions to your domain name '.com' or '.net' to name just two - and all can be pointed to the same place. Many clients see this a protecting their domain, but with many more extension variants now becoming available it can be a difficult task to maintain total control. We suggest just registering the most popular extension variants to begin with.
You can also have more than one unique domain name pointing to your website. You may already have the name of your company as your unique domain name, but you can also have names of your products acting as unique domain names. All names can be pointed to the same place (the home page for example) or they can be pointed to specific parts of your site.
